What is "Airlaid" and Why Does It Feel Exactly Like Real Linen?

If you’ve ever sat down at a dinner party, reached for a SimuLinen napkin, and paused to think, “Wait… is this paper or cloth?”—you are not alone.

It’s the number one question we get from first-time hosts and dinner guests alike. Our products don't have that stiff, scratchy texture of standard paper towels, nor do they look like the flimsy napkins you grab at a fast-food counter. They have the substantial weight, elegant drape, and buttery-soft feel of freshly ironed, woven flax linen.

But how do we achieve that luxury aesthetic without a single thread of cotton or a trip to the washing machine? It all comes down to a fascinating, premium textile technology called Airlaid.

Let’s take a look behind the scenes at how the magic happens.

The Tech Behind the Texture: What Exactly is Airlaid?

To understand why airlaid material feels so luxurious, it helps to understand how traditional paper products are made.

Standard napkins use a "wet-laid" process. Wood fibers are mixed with a massive amount of water, turned into a watery mush, pressed flat, and dried. This causes the fibers to pack together tightly and flatly, resulting in that familiar, thin, stiff paper texture that tears the second it gets wet.

Airlaid technology completely flips the script. Instead of using water to push the fibers together, it uses a high-velocity stream of air.

By using air, fluff pulp fibers (ultra-soft, pure cellulose fibers derived from wood pulp) are gently suspended and evenly dispersed. The air stream deposits them onto a moving belt where they interlock randomly and seamlessly in a beautiful, three-dimensional web.

Three Reasons Airlaid Feels Like Fabric

Because of this unique dry-forming process, our napkins inherit physical characteristics that standard paper simply cannot replicate.

1. Textile-Like Density & Drape

When you hold a SimuLinen Signature napkin, it has visual "bulk." It doesn't crumple up into a tiny ball in your hand. Because the air-woven web is naturally thicker and less dense than pressed paper, it folds into crisp, geometric shapes and hangs over the edge of a table exactly like a high-end woven fabric.

2. It's Twice as Absorbent as Cloth

This is where science gets incredibly cool. The loose, nested web of fibers created by the air-laid process acts like a microscopic matrix of tiny pockets.

The Absorbency Factor: Thanks to this open structure, our airlaid napkins are capable of absorbing up to twice as much liquid as a standard cloth napkin of the exact same size, and over six times their own weight.

Whether it's a condensation spill from an iced cocktail or a splash of red wine, the liquid is drawn instantly into the core of the napkin, keeping the surface feeling dry to the touch.

3. Serious Wet-Strength

Have you ever tried to wipe up a spill with a regular paper napkin, only to have it shred into wet confetti? Airlaid material utilizes a specialized thermal bonding process. The fibers are locked together with clean, heat-activated binders, meaning our napkins maintain their structural integrity even when completely saturated. You can wipe your hands, clean up a mess, and use a single napkin through a multi-course meal without it tearing.

The Best of Both Worlds

Ultimately, airlaid technology allows us to create a product that honors the tradition of a beautifully set table without the modern headache of hosting. You get the soft, premium texture and sophisticated look of fine dining linens, paired with the effortless cleanup of a single-use product.

Next time you host, you can skip the post-party laundry cycle, avoid the ironing board, and feel confident that your tablescapes look absolutely magazine-worthy. That’s the power of airlaid.
